Camping is more comfortable when real conveniences are selected. Camping does not have to be “roughing it”. If you take a little care to select real conveniences you will be just as comfortable, eat just as appetizing food, sleep just as restfully, enjoy just as ample protection from the elements as if you were living in a summer cottage in the mountains.

If you have made up your mind that camping is living on canned and powdered milk, eating salted and smoked meat and fish, trying to whet up an appetite on dehydrated fruit and vegetables, then get over it. You can eat and drink while camping  exactly the same variety of food, with all the freshness and edibility that you would enjoy at home.

This is possible because you take fresh, perishable food along on ice. And you will serve cold drinks filled with ice cubes make from your camping ice makers.  If you believe in using an ice maker at home, then don’t alter your habits in that respect when you go camping.

As a younger adult, I even purchased a pair of patent leather shoes in crimson to satisfy my childhood longing. But these shoes couldn’t produce ice! So I had to turf them. LOL.

The NewAir AI-100R is a tad smaller than my other choice producing up to 28 pounds of ice in a day and it starts churning out cubes within 15 minutes. It’s easy to clean and one of the qualities of these portable ice makers that I like is their ability to recycle the water from the melted ice blocks.

So if you don’t use the ones that have been produced, they will just melt and then go back through the system. I guess the downside is that they don’t hold the cubes in a freezer compartment. That’d be a great quality to incorporate into a portable ice maker!

We could carry along a couple of empty bottles or jars for the sheer purpose of filling them with ice from the ice maker to place next to the milk, yogurt, cheese etc in our esky so that they stay nice and cold and don’t spoil so quickly. Bottles and jars stay colder for longer, but you can use whatever receptacle you like.

We can run the portable ice maker from a generator and although the noise factor in running it might drive me a little nuts personally, I would prefer doing that once or twice a day for 1/2 hr or thereabouts than having to camp somewhere close to the shops.

An ice maker just opens up some options that may not have been there if we didn’t have one.

Let me share some of the great and not so great attributes. To tell you the truth there weren’t a lot of negatives, but the ones I did read are worth knowing. I’ll start with those.

There seems to be a general consensus that the ice can smell and taste of plastic for a couple of cycles. There are instructions on cleaning the ice maker before use and it seems like you might need to turf the first couple of batches.

This problem does concern me. In our environmental climate we are well aware of the nasties that go into plastic and personally I am on a mission to rid my home of as much of it as possible. It’s tricky to live completely plastic free especially if we want a few luxuries in life ie a portable ice maker.

Now this is fascinating. Apparently, you need a certain amount of minerals to help the conductivity necessary for the water level sensor to work properly, so ultra pure water makes the ‘low water’ sensor go off even if the machine is full.

We use a benchtop water filter, so I’m glad I read about that one.

The small and medium sized ice cubes are supposedly useless and you might get smaller cubes until the machine ‘warms’ up, but my Charlotte loves tiny ice blocks so I look at that as a positive.

Now let’s get to the great aspects of the NewAir AI-210SS Portable Ice Maker

It can be left outside when you’re camping and they can run 24/7 for a couple of weeks, maybe more. Also great for indoors in an office.

This might be a no brainer, but purchasing ice becomes obsolete. Nice! One review says it is beyond what the manufacturer promised and yet another person now has a very happy wife. What a bonus if purchasing an ice maker helps your relationship! Gotta love that

The thing that stands out to me is even though some folks wrote the negatives, they were still very happy with their purchase.

The stainless steel body on this ice maker with black lid matches my other appliances that sit out on the kitchen bench here at home so right off the bat it is a winner for me. Probably one of the biggest attractions is the self cleaning mechanism. I like that on ANYthing. I wonder if it self cleans the exterior? Oh, and the rest of the house aswell

A timer is always handy and takes the worry out of producing ice in time for the party. I’m always interested in making my life as stress free as possible. No mean feat when I’m already a stresshead, so I’ll take any help I can get.

Our fridge has a tiny freezer and I find the cube trays take up quite a lot of space. An icemaker sitting on our bench either in the kitchen or laundry would help to take care of that problem. They’re quite attractive looking and it would complement my other kitchen accessories.

Entertaining is pretty high on our list especially over Christmastime and to have ice being made here at home in a portable icemaker saves the worry of  sending someone out to buy some. There’s enough to think about without having to make sure the ice is topped up. I’d probably still buy some to put in the bath or laundry tub for keeping unopened drinks cool. That’s quite an Aussie thing to do.

I also find that when going away we have to make sure we can purchase ice, but why not take along the icemaker and then we don’t have to rely on shop bought ice for our journey and time away?

Another plus is for our daughter. She loves ice cubes winter AND summer. It would also come in handy for surprising her Mum & Dad by sticking some down our tops when we’re least expecting it. I’m sure She’ll figure that one out soon enough and with an icemaker it will be more accessible for her than having to climb on a chair to get into the fridge freezer compartment.
