I mentioned in an earlier post that I like the idea of having a portable ice maker for camping. I didn’t mention why, though. Of course, there’s the obvious that people like to pop ice into their drinks and stick the odd cube down someones top when they least expect it. But what about the perishables that would perish even more rapidly if they weren’t kept on ice?
We could carry along a couple of empty bottles or jars for the sheer purpose of filling them with ice from the ice maker to place next to the milk, yogurt, cheese etc in our esky so that they stay nice and cold and don’t spoil so quickly. Bottles and jars stay colder for longer, but you can use whatever receptacle you like.
We can run the portable ice maker from a generator and although the noise factor in running it might drive me a little nuts personally, I would prefer doing that once or twice a day for 1/2 hr or thereabouts than having to camp somewhere close to the shops.
An ice maker just opens up some options that may not have been there if we didn’t have one.
Here’s an ice maker that would be perfect for the job. Portable Ice Maker – Great for outdoors It has good reviews (and as always a couple of not so good ones to balance things out
), a 4 star rating and ranks high for RV’s, camping and the like.
And, being a portable ice maker, we can still keep it on our kitchen benchtop to use when we’re done with the great outdoors.
And… I have another review of Camping Ice Maker.
